Our Story
In 2000, a small group of compassionate horse lovers gathered around a kitchen table in beautiful southern Colorado, united by a shared concern: the growing number of unwanted and neglected horses in their community. Many had witnessed firsthand the abuse, abandonment, and suffering of local horses-and were determined to make a difference. From that meeting, a mission was born. A handful of dedicated volunteers came together to provide a safe haven for horses in need—offering healing, care, and a second chance to animals broken in body and spirit.

LASSO Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation became a registered nonprofit in 2002 and now provides a home to more than 40 horses each year. Over the past 25 years, we’ve rescued hundreds of horses through sheltering, training, adoption into loving homes, and, when necessary, humane, veterinarian-assisted euthanasia. We also manage two hay banks supporting horses in crisis throughout both Southern and Northern Colorado.

Horses are enduring symbols of the American spirit and the great Southwest. But unlike the wild horses still roaming free, domesticated horses rely entirely on humans for food, care, and shelter. Sadly, too many are still victims of neglect and abandonment. At LASSO, we believe every horse deserves dignity, compassion, and a chance to heal
